*Oncology Reviews*

Recreational therapies — including art, music, dance, yoga, aromatherapy, and virtual reality — produce measurable changes in cortisol levels, heart rate, and immune function in cancer patients, according to a comprehensive review published in *Oncology Reviews*. The findings support their role as evidence-based components of integrated oncology care.
Recreational therapies (RecT) have long been appreciated for improving quality of life during cancer treatment, but the specific biological and psychological mechanisms behind their benefits have remained poorly understood. Researchers at the Ospedale Isola Tiberina – Gemelli Isola in Rome undertook this review to map clinical evidence across cancer types, treatment stages, and intervention modalities.
The analysis confirmed that RecT interventions exert a broad range of biopsychosocial effects. Physiologically, they modulate cortisol — a key stress hormone elevated in cancer patients — regulate heart rate variability, and enhance immune response parameters. Psychologically, they reduce depression and anxiety, strengthen coping skills, and improve social support networks.
Critically, RecT also showed evidence of mitigating treatment-related side effects that frequently derail cancer care: nausea and vomiting, cancer-related fatigue, and sleep disturbances. By reducing these burdens, RecT may indirectly improve treatment adherence and contribute to better overall health outcomes.
The authors proposed a comprehensive framework that positions RecT as an integrated, evidence-informed element of personalized supportive oncology — not a luxury or comfort measure, but a legitimate therapeutic component that should be matched to individual patients' values and preferences.
> Health tip: Cancer patients during and after treatment should ask their care team about available evidence-based supportive programs — music therapy, art therapy, yoga, or mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR). These are increasingly offered at major cancer centers and can meaningfully complement medical treatment.
